What is the theme of Safer Internet Day 2023

This year's Safer Internet Day will take place on February 7, 2023 and the theme will be 'Want to talk about it? Making space for conversations about life online.’ The objective is to put children's and young people's voices at the center of the day and encourage them to share their experiences online, in turn, to help shape the safety support that they receive.

This year is a special one, as the event will be celebrating its 20th anniversary. To celebrate this, the organizers will highlight all of the achievements of the past years during a big virtual event where they will also be giving the floor to young people to describe their online experience and discuss new solutions for the future. This event perfectly fits with the theme of the year, allowing the younger generations to express themselves and to be heard by institutions and companies.

What is Yubo doing for Safer Internet 2023? 

For the fourth year in a row, Yubo is taking part in Safer Internet Day to offer helpful resources and information to our users. To do so, Yubo is collaborating with two NGOs for in-app swipe campaigns in the US, UK, France, Canada, Ireland, South Africa and Australia.  

Childnet is a UK-based charity working to make the internet a great and safe place for children and young people. They empower children and those who support them in their online lives by sharing the knowledge and skills they need to make the most out of the internet. 

Childnet is also one of the historic organizers of Safer Internet Day, so they are the perfect partner to help us provide resources relevant to the event's themes.

At Yubo, our mission is to empower young people to discover and belong. It is, therefore, essential for us to provide our users with as safe a space as possible to express themselves and share their ideas and opinions. 

The theme 'Want to talk about it? Making space for conversations about life online is a theme that is very close to our hearts, and we wanted to involve Childnet directly in sharing resources and advice with our users. 

In working with them to create an in-app campaign, our English-speaking users will be able to access helpful tips and information through swiping beginning February 7.

This campaign has been specifically designed to encourage young people to share their online experiences. All users who decide to swipe right on the campaign will be redirected to the page with tips on how to participate in this year's Safer Internet Day and especially on responsible online behaviour.

Respect Zone is a French NGO specializing in the prevention, support and care of young people facing cyber-violence, cyber-bullying and online hate. The NGO is known for its proactive vision and does not hesitate to bring these issues into the public debate in order to raise awareness among key stakeholders.

Respect Zone is constantly working to improve its reporting and user support systems. They recently released a Respect Zone app, which helps users to manage cyberbullying or online harassment by providing them with tailored advice depending on their situation and who they are (young person, educator or parent). The app raises awareness of the invisible signs of cyberbullying and supports anyone who finds themselves a victim of it by offering a space to express themselves in complete safety.

Have an open conversation on Safer Internet Day 2023

You’ve probably heard of some of the world’s greatest Black activists including Martin Luther King Jr, Harriet Tubman, Malcolm X, and Frederick Douglas. While it will always be important to recognize these figures and how they’ve changed our world and contributed to the evolution of our humanity, it’s also important to acknowledge the people who are making history today. For this Black History Month, we’re highlighting modern black achievements  to not only acknowledge those who have made history, but to inspire and prove that anyone at any time, can leave their mark. 

Black History Month is a month dedicated to honoring the contributions and sacrifices of Black Americans who helped shape the nation. It’s also a month for celebrating Black Americans, their achievements, their culture, and their legacies. 

February was first officially recognized as Black History month in 1976 by President Gerald Ford. February was chosen because of Carter G Woodson, an American historian and founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. Woodson established Negro History Week as a week in February in 1926. He chose this because of both President Lincoln and Frederick Douglas having their birthdays celebrated in February. 

The first Black, first Asian American, and first female vice president. Starting her career as a deputy district attorney in California, Harris worked her way to become Attorney General of California, then a member of the U.S. Senate, and finally, in 2021, she was sworn in as the vice president. An achievement that only 48 other Americans have ever experienced and that marks many firsts for this country. 

The first and only Black driver in Formula 1 (F1) racing, and the first Black driver to win the F1 World Driver’s Championship. Not only that, but he also made history by having the F1 record for most career race victories and is tied for the most World Drivers’ Championships. Hamilton eventually created The Hamilton Commission, an organization dedicated to improving Black representation in UK motorsport. 

Harvard Assistant Professor of Immunology and Infectious Diseases, Dr. Corbett was the lead scientist on the mRNA-1273 vaccine (more regularly known as a part of the Moderna vaccine). At just 35 years old, Dr. Corbett earned a TIME Magazine Hero of the Year designation and has become recognized as a leader in science today. 

Ryan Coogler is the first Black director of a Marvel film. While this may seem niche, Marvel is the highest-grossing movie franchise of all time with Coogler’s Black Panther being the 18th movie to be released in the franchise. Coogler has since also directed Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and, outside of the Marvel franchise, is notable for directing the Creed movie series as well. Even after 30+ Marvel movies have been released, Black Panther stands as Marvel’s 6th highest grossing film. 

Nia DaCosta is the first Black female director of a Marvel film with her film, Captain Marvel, being the 21st movie of the Marvel franchise. She will make her return to Marvel with the upcoming The Marvels. DaCosta is also known for directing Candyman. 

The first person to be named National Youth Poet Laureate and the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history. Gorman’s work highlights important social and political issues and inspires others to strive for a better future. To quote Gorman, “There is always light. If only we’re brave enough to see it. If we’re only brave enough to be it.”

The most decorated gymnast in World Championships history, with a total of 32 World and Olympic medals. She is the first woman to win five world all-around titles, three World balance beam titles, and five World floor exercise titles. Biles even (accidentally) became a mental health advocate for athletes, when she opted out of competing for fear for her safety due to her mental health state in the Tokyo 2020 olympics. 

Ta-Nehisi Coates is a renowned journalist, writer, and author who has been recognized with countless awards for his thought-provoking writing on race and politics in the United States. His nonfiction book, Between The World and Me, urges the discussion of feelings, symbolism, and realities of being Black in the United States. 

Former Georgia State Representative, Stacey Abrams, is the first Black woman to lead in the Georgia General Assembly. She is a voting rights activist and an author who has won awards for her work on social justice. She founded Fair Fight, an organization promoting fair elections across the United States. 

These individuals represent just a fraction of the many Black individuals who have made significant contributions and achieved notable milestones in the United States in recent years. Their accomplishments in fields ranging from politics to sports, business to science, and art to activism continue to inspire and empower future generations of Americans. These achievements demonstrate the strength, resilience, and impact of Black individuals in the United States today and give us hope for the future. 

Modern Black Achievements

It’s never easy when a friendship ends. Whether you decided to end it because it’s a relationship that’s no longer positive, there was a relationship-ending event, or it was a totally mutual and natural decision to break up – it still hurts. Losing a friend is not talked about nearly as much as romantic breakups are, but it can hurt just as much – if not more – than a romantic breakup. Friends are people you go on adventures with, hang out with constantly, laugh with, cry with, and share priceless moments with. Losing that can be pretty tough, even if it came to a natural end. It’s completely normal to feel down bad.

Here are some tips on how to help you get through your loss, move past it, and hopefully, come to peace with it.

Exercise. It may sound ridiculous, but if you are not currently active, adding some grit and sweat to your day will make a huge difference. After losing a friend, it’s likely you're feeling down on yourself and maybe even experiencing some symptoms of depression. Exercise is not a complete cure, but it will definitely help you see the light at the end of the tunnel and get those positive endorphins flowing. It's biological. Now, exercise can take many different forms, so you’re not forced to lift weights in a sweaty commercial gym (unless you want to). Playing sports, going on walks, running, even yoga, are all forms of exercise that will help lighten your mood. Exercise is a simple and easy starting point.

Acknowledge your situation. You might think, my situation is obvious, I lost a close friendship. Stating the obvious might technically be acknowledgement, but not in the full sense of the word. Yes, you lost a friend, but how does that affect you now? Are you sad? Or are you feeling relieved? Do you miss them or wish you could take things back? These are important questions that will help you understand your emotional state and process the feelings you’re having so you can heal. By understanding your emotional state, or simply, how your friendship breakup is sitting with you, you have more information to take the right steps forward.

Be Sad. This may sound counter intuitive, but feeling sad can actually be a really positive thing. What you just went through is tough, really tough. You lost a valid connection with another human being and all the history you share with them may even seem tainted. Repressing emotions is never a good thing and often only buries those feelings which eventually will appear later on or makes those feelings worse. Losing a friend is sad, and those feelings you have are valid. So take the time you need to feel sad.

Change it up. You just lost something, even though a friend is not a physical thing. Your life might feel like there is now a void or empty space. You might still be falling into old habits like going to send them a meme or call them when you are bored. Changing your life up can help to wipe away old habits and let you start fresh. You will be more conscious of what you are doing and hopefully, get a little creative with your time. Another aspect of losing a friend that changing it up really helps with is if your ex-friend was a part of the same friend group. This might be uncomfortable for everyone in that friend group, especially you. Try another friend group or even try making some new friends. This is not about replacing what you lost, but rather taking another useful step towards moving on. 

Reflect on your friendship. This may be a harder step for some, especially if you were in a friendship that  turned from sweet to sour. Many friendships end because of toxic or negative actions, whether they were one-sided or mutual. The root of the toxic events can often be passed over, making this breakup confusing or feel out of the blue. It’s important to identify what you took issue with in the friendship. Whether they are actions or values, you don’t need to agree with them. By identifying what went wrong, you will be able to determine potential red flags (or green flags) in future friendships. 

These are just some tips that might help you ease the grief of your loss. Remember, it takes time. It would be unfair to expect yourself to quickly and easily move on from losing a friend, even if they weren’t your bestie.

Recycling is something we have all heard of and hopefully practice – you know, separating paper, cardboard, plastics from the trash and tossing it in that big blue bin. It has become an increasingly important issue for Gen Z and for good reason. Gen Z has grown up in a world facing environmental challenges like pollution, environmental depletion, and of course climate change. Naturally, positively impacting the earth from an environmental standpoint is a huge priority and what better way to start out than with garbage. You might have heard of “wishcycling” from on of our other blogs, which explains that only 5% to 6% of all recyclables in the United States are actually recycled! What happens to the rest? Sadly, a lot of times it gets mixed in with the other garbage and sent off to landfills.

The first step is to understand that recycling looks different depending on where you are. For starters, each US state (and country) has its own recycling laws, procedures, and facilities that allow them to properly sort and recycle various materials. The main reason these even differ from state to state is because of each state’s infrastructure. Based on their infrastructure, they can only handle so much recycling and the resources they have greatly impact their ability to recycle properly. The best thing you can do is find out what the recycling laws are where you live, so you can recycle properly. 

Another way you can help to minimize waste, which is ultimately what recycling is all about, is to use less disposable items. For example, you likely remember the large fuss about plastic straws. Use them once and then throw them away, that’s a huge waste! In many places, one time use of plastic bags and non-biodegradable plastic silverware is not allowed. That is why you will notice many take out packaging and cutlery is biodegradable or even recyclable.

The main benefit of recycling is that it helps reduce the amount of waste and chemicals that ends up in landfills and therefore in the environment. Not only are landfills ugly and smell bad, but they also release large amounts of methane. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that is the main contributor to climate change. By recycling materials such as paper, plastic, and metal, we can greatly reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills and produces more methane. Not only does this help mitigate the effects of climate change, but it also helps create a more sustainable future.

Another great benefit of recycling that is often overlooked is its preservation qualities. By recycling materials like paper, we have less of a need to cut down more trees. Recycling essentially keeps materials in circulation, which therefore helps preserve the environment. Recycling does not only benefit paper, it also benefits other raw materials required to make things like plastic and metal (which uses a lot of oil and minerals, not to mention the energy needed to harvest and reform these raw materials). Plastic is rightfully villainized because once it is made, it never decomposes, which means it will exist on this earth forever… unless it is recycled!

Eventually, some resources will grow back. Trees are the prime example of this. Other materials like certain minerals and oils are finite, which means that once we run out, we are out! By recycling, we can ensure that we are using these precious resources more efficiently and that they will be available for future generations to come.

Recycling can also have many economic benefits. Taking recycling more seriously would help stimulate jobs inside and outside of the recycling industry. Somebody needs to build the infrastructure and keep it running, creating more jobs in the short and long term. Additionally, recycling can save a lot of energy required to make products from scratch! For example, recycling aluminium cans can save up to 95% of the energy needed to produce new cans. Not only does this save production costs, which saves businesses money, but it would also end up saving the consumer money as well!

Recycling is a step towards a greener planet and a greener society if done correctly of course. Reducing waste through recycling can help reduce pollution and improve the air and water quality, which benefits literally everyone. It benefits the animals and wildlife, as well as the humans equally as much. A cleaner planet is a healthier planet and a healthier planet means healthier people. It goes further than just preserving the current wildlife we have (which is incredibly important for our planet's biodiversity and balance of nature), it also greatly affects what people consume.

If you are a vegetarian or a vegan, skip this paragraph. Having a healthier planet means that animals get more nutrition from their food, keeping them happier and healthier. If you happen to eat meat, this means your food would be better for you too. Not to mention that animals play a huge role in fertilizing and sowing the land, creating fresher fruits and vegetables for everyone to enjoy!

Recycling has so many benefits it is hard to keep track of them all. If one thing can become clear from this blog and from Gen Z’s perspective, it is that recycling is important and should be practiced all over the world – no matter where you are.

The Importance of Recycling to Gen Z

We all know about ‘red flags.’ They’re those unflattering traits or behaviors of another person that tell you to proceed with caution and that they may be someone to avoid welcoming into your life. Well, if there are such clear signs of what to avoid, then what about the ‘green flags’? The signs that inform you that a person is likely great. In today’s fast-paced digital world, it can be challenging to identify these positive traits in others. But, understanding and recognizing green flags is essential for building strong, healthy relationships, especially friendships. Let’s take a look at the most important green flags that you should look out for when building friendships. 

First and foremost, they show up on time. Showing up on time, means they respect you and your time. And any form of respect is always a green flag. When they show up on time, they’re proving that they care. Not only this, but by showing up on time, they’re demonstrating that they are reliable and organized. You can rely on them to stay true to their commitments and to be generally dependable.

Honesty is at the foundation of every successful relationship. To be honest means to be transparent about your intentions, feelings, actions, and admitting to mistakes when you make them. Honesty is about being genuine and authentic in your interactions with others. If you can’t trust the words they say or actions they make, then you can’t trust them as a person. However, when someone is honest with you, then you know they are trustworthy and that’s a huge green flag. 

What is active listening? Active listening is respectfully listening, understanding, and responding to another person. This is a positive attribute to have because it shows the person has empathy, respect, a willingness to learn about you, and is an effective communicator – or at least will try to be. While you can’t expect someone to always understand what you share or say, their attempt at doing so by being an active listener is what matters.  

Empathy is a very valuable quality to find in another person, especially in today’s world. Empathy represents the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. Between the quick judgments on social media and extreme biases by mainstream media, it can be hard to slow down and remember that in every situation we experience there are real people, with real emotions and feelings, involved. Someone who is optimistic, and always tries to find the positives in life, no matter how difficult the situation, is someone who could very well brighten each and every day. They’re not someone who allows you to get dragged down with all the negativity in the world. Instead, they’ll remind you of happiness.

An open-minded person is one who is willing to consider new ideas, perspectives, feedback, and opinions that may differ from their own. When someone is open-minded, it allows for better, more balanced communication and often greater understanding of others. An open-minded person won’t judge you for being you and won’t criticize you for the way you think. And that’s why it’s a green flag, because it’s someone you can just be your true self with.

So let’s talk about doxing – What is it? 

Doxing or doxxing is the act of releasing private information about someone else publicly, without their permission, for everyone else online to see. If you’ve heard the term “dropping docs,” that is what doxxing is about. The intent behind doxing is almost always malicious – it is typically used as an act of revenge to embarrass a targeted victim. It can also sometimes be used as an attack motivated by social justice to expose sensitive information about controversial political figures or shady businesses, or a way to add fire to a current online debate with concrete proof.

Doxing has been around for years, but recently the press shed some light on these attacks as more and more celebrities are getting hacked or doxed such as Kim Kardashian, Cardi B or Donald Trump. A couple weeks ago, Elon Musk, who recently acquired the social network Twitter, announced wanting to eradicate doxing from his platform after he publicly declared he had been allegedly hacked by a journalist.

Doxing can take many different forms, but doxxers often try to gather as much information as possible about someone. Getting access to one piece of personal information typically gives access to more, which is why it is necessary to use safe behavior online and avoid sharing private information about yourself that could be later used by someone with bad intentions. 

What information are doxxers looking for?

Social media is one of the main tools doxxers use to target victims – whether it’s through Facebook, Twitter, Tiktok or any others. Securing your account by going through all available privacy settings and tools to your disposal is essential to keeping your identity private. Doxxers are looking mainly for phone numbers, names, IP addresses, e-mails, home addresses, places of work, family member information, and so on – but it can even go as far as banking information for instance. 

Phishing is one common technique used by doxxers to steal personal information. They basically send suspicious links through DMs, texts or emails. If you click on it, they may be able to gather information such as your IP address, which is also often linked to your device information as well as your current location. Doxxers also may try to befriend you to get you to share personal details such as your phone number or address, so always think twice before sharing any identifying information with another person.

Anyone who releases public information online can be targeted by doxxers. Risks can vary depending on the intent and the type of content shared. For example, private pictures you took of yourself could be made public on social media. Unfortunately, most times people who receive this information will not bother verifying the accuracy of what is shared, which can lead to harassment and have detrimental effects on mental health. Doxxers may even use this information as leverage by threatening or blackmailing in exchange for money or favors. 

Doxing is illegal in the United States, but can depend on the nature of the information gathered. This behavior is extremely hard for authorities to prove actually took place. However, most social media platforms have their own tools to detect and ban doxxers. At Yubo, we believe any form of doxing is cyberbullying or harassment, and it is prohibited from our platform. Anyone who targets another user through doxing on the app may be subject to severe consequences including having their account suspended.

What can you do to protect yourself against doxxers? 

Here is some advice you can take into consideration when creating an account on Yubo, or any other social media platforms, to make sure you are stay safe and protecting your personal information. 

Be careful of what you put in your bio. Do not put your full name, where you live, what school you go to or any other personally identifiable information (PII) that can give clues about your identity or things you don’t want anyone to know. The same rule applies in DMs. As a reminder, on Yubo, every time you are about to share personal information such as your phone number or address, you will receive a pop-up message to make you think twice about sending and also allow you to delete your message if you change your mind. 

Avoid sharing your social media handles. It can seem a bit extreme, but if you don’t want strangers to have access to pictures of your family and friends for instance, it might be worth considering. You should also avoid sharing your location on social media in real-time. Instead, wait until you’ve already left wherever you are before posting.

When creating a new social media account, don't choose a username that is the same as any of your other usernames on other social media channels. This can make it easy for others to find and link your profiles and gather additional information about you

When you livestream, avoid sharing private information about yourself. Another tip is to avoid screensharing if you have any personal conversations or images on your device that you don’t want other people to see. 

Hide your location. On Yubo, we allow you to keep your location private. In fact, for all users under age 18, location is disabled by default. If you are under 18, you do not have the option to manually activate your location in your settings. Only adult users over 18 have access to this option. If you are an adult user and you choose to disable your location, only your country will be visible to other users.

Make sure your password is strong enough. It’s even better if it’s not the same password used across all of your different online accounts. 

You can also use VPN software, which will allow your IP address to be hidden from anyone attempting to access it.

How to Avoid Doxing

When we think of social media we think of opening an app and seeing what other people are up to. We think of scrolling through a feed twice curated, once by the posters and twice by the platform, creating a certain mirage of lifestyles and depictions through various types of content. That is what we think of first. Secondly, we might think of posting here and there if we have a photogenic moment or other experience to share. Or perhaps you take social media and content creation seriously, so you spend hours creating content that is in line with the vibe you want to portray. Then you post it and hope it performs well. You hope other people see it, engage with it, and share it – and if you’re lucky, it goes viral. But for the most part, our feeds are full of influencers, celebrities, brands or other huge pages or creators who do this full-time.

While social media’s origins were synonymous with its name, it has evolved into something quite different. To generalize, the better name for modern social media might be “parasocial media.” In case you don’t know what a parasocial relationship is, it is one that is “one-sided.” The best example of this is celebrities and their fans. We all love Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and we feel like we know him, meanwhile, he doesn’t know most of us exist. It would be impossible for him to. Robin Dunbar, a British anthropologist, believes that humans can only maintain about 150 connections at one time. Modern scientists tend to agree with his theory, so how can Dwayne know all 357 million of his followers (on Instagram alone)? He can’t and that’s okay.

Now let me ask you this, does any of that sound social? Not really, huh? This isn’t a reason to stop using social media, nor should you feel shorted from your online interactions and experiences. Social media has changed the world and created a lot of opportunities for many. It has changed journalism and news, it has held many accountable, given many a voice, made many people laugh, sparked creativity, broadened our horizons, made people feel less alone, and so much more. It just feels a bit hokey calling it “social” media when it is barely social anymore. There are apps that focus on putting the “social” back in social media, like Yubo. It’s the New Year. And just as every New Year has started, everyone is thinking about their 2023 resolutions. In typical fashion, even though they had an entire year to work on these resolutions prior, no one did. So, instead, they say this will be my year and commit a few weeks of 2023 to these goals. After all, New Year, New Me. But, should it be? You’ve gotten this far on being you, so why change that? Instead focus on small changes to create a better life, rather than a new you. 

How to budget better? Well, we’re not here to discuss the 50/30/20 rule, recommend any investments or ridicule you for buying necessities. We’ll focus on the smaller aspects, and the more doable changes you can make now. 

Wait at least 24 hours before making a major or frivolous purchase. You’re scrolling through your favorite store’s webpage and see the perfect item. Would you even have considered buying it if it didn’t appear in front of you right now? That’s what the 24-hour rule is for. It’ll give you time to think about whether you really need that item or not. Maybe every time you wait 24 hours, you still decide to buy the item afterwards, and that’s fine! But, it will still help to remove buyer’s remorse and bring a little mindfulness into your consumption habits. 

On top of waiting 24 hours, make sure you also don’t give in just because something is trendy or cool right now. You’re watching your favorite influencer and they recommend a product, or maybe it’s the viral video of a singular piece of clothing that everyone must have. It’s easy to get distracted by all the shiny new things we see on social media daily, but remember, you don’t always need it. But, if even after 24 hours you still really want it, then live your life!

Sleep, as much as our high school teachers may not have thought so, is essential. Getting the proper amount of sleep each night can help you stay healthier physically and mentally. How can you improve your sleep? Start with these simple steps:

We know life can be hectic, and doesn't always go according to plan. But, every night when getting in bed, try to create a similar routine. Whether it’s your end-of-day skincare, a great book, or putting on some mellow music and turning the lights down, try to create a routine. Your routine will notify your brain each night that it’s time to go to bed. 

Avoid caffeine in the afternoon (and evening)

Whether it’s coffee, tea, soda, or any other form of caffeine, put all of it down at least 7 hours before you go to bed. Even if you may not be feeling the effects of your caffeine intake at the end of the night, studies have shown that it can still affect your sleep. 

The quicker you turn off your phone screen before bed, the faster your brain will be able to turn off for the night too. For some people, this may be part of your pre-bedtime routine. We’ve all lost time endlessly scrolling through 5 second videos, not understanding how those 5 seconds turned into over an hour of your night gone. So, if you aren’t able to put down your phone screen before the nighttime routine begins, at least put it down a tad earlier than you usually would. 

And now we’ve reached the typical New Year’s resolution of exercising more. But, as said before, this isn’t a resolutions article, this is for betterment and simply making small improvements to your similar lifestyle – not changing what you’re all about entirely. Exercise doesn’t have to be sweating it out in a gym or following a Youtuber’s workouts. It can simply be taking a walk outside or even a few circles in your room. Just move and get your blood flowing. 

Why is moving your body every day important? Movement can aid in reducing stress, helping you think more clearly, giving you more energy, better sleep and just all around a better feeling or mood. You don’t need to block large times out of your day to move. Just do what you can with what you’ve got and if you find yourself needing a break from the stresses of everyday life, take a walk. 

You’ve likely been hearing this from your parents since you were a child, but there actually are benefits to going outside. You can read more about the vast benefits and studies behind them here. But, to sum it up for you, the key benefits to taking some time outside include physical and mental wellness, such as reducing stress and muscle tension, and providing a relaxing element overall. 

While you’re outside, maybe take the opportunity to practice gratitude or positive affirmations, or even call a friend and check in on how they’re feeling about the new year.
